DETECTRA amongst the 10 digital healthcare start-ups awarded by the Future of Health
Switzerland has long been a hub for medical innovation, and the recognition of ten standout digital health startups reinforces this reputation. One such standout is DETECTRA, selected in 2022 by the Future of Health Grant—a program by EPFL Innovation Park and CSS Insurance—that supports emerging healthtech solutions across three funding tiers (CHF 10,000–50,000).
From nearly 95 submitted projects, only ten startups, including DETECTRA, were chosen for their market-ready solutions that combine medical and digital sciences. This dual-technology criterion isn’t easy, signaling that DETECTRA’s AI-powered arthritis imaging platform—designed for remote self-imaging—demonstrates both clinical validity and technological maturity. DETECTRA was awarded Grant Level 2 to support its prototype development.
The DETECTRA difference
While many startups dabble in wellness or symptom tracking, DETECTRA takes a clinical approach. Its AI-driven platform allows patients to capture hand images and videos using their smartphones, with algorithms assessing inflammation, swelling, and mobility—directly addressing a high-priority need in rheumatology. This remote- and image-based biomarker approach empowers both patients and providers with objective data.
Crucially, the Future of Health Grant doesn’t just fund but also mentors. Grantees receive hands-on support, coaching, and access to a robust network. As a result, DETECTRA benefits from the strategic advantage of Swiss-based mentorship while refining its clinical workflows and product-market fit.
Market potential
Rheumatic diseases affect hundreds of millions globally, and with aging populations, incidence is rising. Compounded by rheumatologist shortages in key markets (Europe, U.S.), the need for scalable, remote solutions is clear. DETECTRA hits this spot:
Smartphone-based monitoring aligns with global trends toward telehealth and digital-first care.
Objective biomarkers reduce subjectivity and enhance clinical evidence.
Clinician-focused dashboard ensures data is translated into actionable insights and supports efficient treatment decisions.
With a solution that’s already showing promising results, DETECTRA is firmly positioned to capture a share of the expanding digital rheumatology market.
